A Message to Our Customers Regarding Coronavirus/COVID-19

As the global Coronavirus/COVID-19 public health pandemic continues to spread and create rapidly changing conditions and challenges for people and businesses worldwide, we want to assure you that are focused on ensuring the health, safety and well-being of our employees, customers, supply chain partners and the communities in which we operate around the globe.  This is our first and foremost duty and responsibility.  Like many others, our teams are closely following guidelines from CDC, WHO and other local and international health organizations, while continuing to provide top-notch products and services.

As of today (3/23), despite the current COVID-19 situation in Pennsylvania and the United States, we are open! Tiger’s operations are considered part of essential life-sustaining business under PA Governor’s order on 3/19, as a Manufacturer of Measuring & Control Instruments. Therefore, we are specifically permitted to continue physical operations. Note that this is a very fluid situation that may change at any time, so we will keep you informed as updates are available.

In these uncertain times, one thing that remains is our commitment to bring you the high-performance gas analyzers that are easy to use and field-proven reliable. We will continue to provide support via emails, phone calls, and online meetings to meet our customers’ and business partners’ requests above and beyond. Feel free to reach out to our team or your local distributor if you have any questions.

Headache-Free Moisture Analysis in Medical Oxygen

Medical oxygen, a widely used gas in the healthcare industry, must meet the necessary quality to prevent harm to patients. Strict standards outline limits to a variety of possible impurities in the gas, one of them being water vapor (H2O).

One of the most common standards for medical oxygen is the European Pharmacopeia (EP) standard. We are pleased to present a detailed Application Note, demonstrating experimentally that the Tiger Optics Spark analyzer allows accurate measurement of moisture in oxygen to within ±4% or 6 ppb, whichever is greater. Thereby, it demonstrates equivalency with the European Pharmacopeia standard, which mandates a relative accuracy of less than ±20%.

The Tiger Optics Spark analyzer affords a significant performance advantage over the incumbent electrolytic-based sensors, including:

  • Faster speed of response
  • Higher accuracy
  • Lower maintenance
  • Wider dynamic range
  • Lower detection limits.

This allows for better throughput and simplified product qualification, ultimately saving end-users time and money. While the results presented here focus on moisture in oxygen, the flexible Spark is also ideal for measurement in many other gases, including nitrogen, clean dry air, and argon.

Safety Assurance in Air Separation Plants—Directly measure CH4, C2H2 and CO2 with CRDS

The processes used to separate air into its main components has been in use for over a century.  The main production gases of Nitrogen, Oxygen and Argon are used in industries from semiconductor manufacturing to steel production and everything in between.

Air separation is one of the most well-developed of the gas manufacturing processes and yet there are still inherent gas safety issues to consider in the various gas streams.

Air contains many trace-level impurities that must be measured and dealt with to avoid issues in the production processes including plugging, reactions and corrosion.  Due to various boiling points many of the trace impurities are found in the oxygen product and may concentrate in the oxygen unless removed.  Low boiling hydrocarbons (propane, ethane, ethylene, methane and acetylene), if left unmonitored, may enter the cold box, concentrate and cause severe hazards for ASU operations.

Previously total hydrocarbon (THC) analyzers have been utilized to show one common THC value.  Most recently, with the adoption of affordable and accurate laser-based technologies many companies are transitioning to measuring specific hydrocarbon gases of concern.  Laser-based technologies such as Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) allow for very fast, accurate and maintenance-free measurements of key indicator gases in an ASU process.  Tiger Optics has successfully installed our Spark CRDS units to measure for CH4, C2H2 and CO2 in air separation plants around the world.

How do Spark analyzers help your industrial gas process? Cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) offers several important advantages, such as:

  • Ensure gas quality by monitoring CH4, C2H2 and more
  • Provide superior response speed for better process control
  • Extend maintenance cycles of ASU molecular sieve beds
  • Significant savings on calibration and maintenance costs than cumbersome technologies
  • Provide drift-free accuracy and reduce downtime
  • Enhanced ease of use
