Hydrogen Isotope & Helium Deuterium Analysis

Hydrogen Isotope & Helium Deuterium Analysis

Our EXTREL™ mass spectrometers are high-precision instruments used widely in both research and industry. They support detailed analysis of gases and isotopes. Notably, they offer exceptional sensitivity, stability, and customizable configurations. As a result, EXTREL systems are ideal for isotope ratio measurements and trace gas analysis.

In particular, their quadrupole and magnetic sector mass spectrometers deliver high-resolution mass separation. This makes them indispensable in fields like nuclear fusion, environmental science, and plasma research.

One key application is the analysis of hydrogen isotopes—protium (¹H), deuterium (²H or D), and tritium (³H). These isotopes are essential in fusion energy studies and materials science. With EXTREL, researchers can accurately differentiate and quantify hydrogen isotopes. This enables effective monitoring of fuel composition, isotopic exchange, and fusion reactor dynamics.

Moreover, EXTREL systems support advanced ionization techniques and detectors. These allow for precise measurements of light isotopes, even in complex gas mixtures.

In addition to hydrogen, EXTREL is also effective for helium-deuterium analysis. This is especially valuable in plasma diagnostics and fusion fuel monitoring. Isotopes like He-3, He-4, and deuterium play critical roles in these environments. EXTREL’s robust analysis systems help scientists track isotopic ratios, detect impurities, and maintain process control. Their ability to resolve low-mass ions with high accuracy makes them foundational tools in advanced energy system development.

Solutions for Hydrogen Isotope & Helium Deuterium Analysis

Designed specifically for Low Mass Gas Analysis applications, our EXTREL™ Flange Mounted Mass Spectrometers have been providing unmatched performance for Nuclear, Gas Production and Hydrogen Fuel Cell industries for decades.  This Series offer the high resolution, sensitivity and abundance sensitivity needed for Hydrogen and Helium/Deuterium Analysis. They are capable of easily separating atomic Hydrogen from the On-Blast, as well as separating of Helium and Deuterium (which are separated by only 0.0028 amu) so a researcher can confidently measure their contributions.

We have also introduced the VeraSpec HRQ total analytical system.  The HRQ was engineered and designed for high throughput and process analysis.  It is ideal for heavy water analysis, low mass isotopic analysis and Helium purity.  Along with high resolution capabilities it comes standard with our molecular beam axial ionizer which allows for very fine control of ionization energies allowing for appearance potential studies through low energy soft ionization of the individual molecules.
