What Are Gaseous Certified Reference Materials?

Gaseous Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) are gas standards with certified property values used to establish measurement traceability, calibrate analytical instruments, validate measurement methods, and support reliable quantitative gas analysis.

For laboratories, gas producers, metrology institutes, and industrial users, confidence in the reference gas directly affects confidence in the measurement made against it.

Why Is Calibration Gas Verification Important?

Calibration gases establish known reference points used to evaluate analytical instruments and measurement systems. Unwanted impurities or uncertainty in the gas can influence measurement quality—particularly as analytical requirements move toward increasingly low concentrations.

High-sensitivity gas analysis can support:

  • Certified Reference Material preparation
  • CRM verification measurements
  • Calibration gas mixture verification
  • Trace impurity analysis
  • Gas purity analysis
  • Transfer standards
  • Zero gas determination
  • Metrology and research applications

Why Use Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy?

Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) is a highly sensitive laser absorption measurement technique used to quantify specific gas molecules at extremely low concentrations.

Rather than measuring the absolute intensity of a light source, CRDS measures the rate at which laser light decays—or “rings down”—inside a highly reflective optical cavity. The presence of a target molecule changes that decay rate, allowing its concentration to be determined.

For CRM and calibration gas applications, CRDS provides important analytical advantages:

High sensitivity
Measure selected impurities from ppm down to ppb and ppt concentrations, depending on the analyzer, target species, and gas matrix.

High selectivity
Laser-based measurement targets specific molecular absorption features.

Fast online analysis
Continuously monitor gas rather than relying exclusively on intermittent measurements.

Direct optical measurement
CRDS provides a fundamentally different analytical approach from consumable sensor technologies.

Low maintenance
Process Insights currently positions its CRDS analyzers as providing fast online monitoring without routine calibration or maintenance requirements.
