he NitriTox instrument uses bioluminescent bacteria to measure the toxicity of water samples. It works by detecting changes in the light (luminescence) the bacteria produce when exposed to toxic substances.
To begin with, a small amount of bioluminescent bacteria is added to a sample chamber that holds the water being tested. The bacteria used are typically a strain of Vibrio fischeri, which naturally emits light when affected by certain chemicals.
Next, the NitriTox uses a photomultiplier tube to measure the light given off by the bacteria. This device detects the level of luminescence and converts it into an electrical signal.
If toxic substances are present in the water, the light produced by the bacteria will decrease. This drop in luminescence indicates the presence of toxicity.
Finally, the NitriTox calculates a toxicity score based on how much the luminescence is reduced. This score helps evaluate the severity of toxicity in the water sample.
